Bemba Mask
Babemba means “the people
of the lake.” The
Bembas settled mostly in northeast of Zambia and the
southeast of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
The Bemba mask
goes with the circumcision of the bwamis. It
consisted of dances, songs, and the handling of objects.
Those initiated would use figures sculpted from
elephant
tusks or wood, wooden masks, as emblems of the highest
levels, a stool or an anthropomorphic figurine. The
initiation in the elanda male society ends with the
appearance of the Bemba Mask, and the viewing of it
was forbidden to the non-initiated. Otherwise.
